H1N1 Cases Rise: Children, Elderly Among Most Vulnerable

H1N1 cases are rising in Delhi, prompting doctors to urge extra caution, especially among children, elderly people, pregnant women and those with existing health conditions. Delhi has recorded more than 1,777 H1N1 cases till August 20, over six times the 229 cases reported during the same period last year.

Doctors say common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and fatigue. While most infections are mild, vulnerable groups can face a higher risk of complications. Importantly, ICMR scientists have clarified that the virus currently circulating in India is not a new H1N1 strain, so there is no need for panic.

Health experts are advising people to maintain hand and respiratory hygiene, avoid crowded places when unwell and limit close contact with infected individuals. People in high-risk groups are also being advised to seek medical attention promptly if flu-like symptoms appear and discuss seasonal influenza vaccination with their doctor. Self-medication, particularly with antibiotics, should be avoided without medical advice.
