China has warned of unspecified “consequences” after Taiwan participated in the annual Pacific Islands Forum in Palau. Beijing objected to Taiwan’s presence, maintaining that the island is part of China and should not participate in international forums in this manner.
Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung defended the country’s participation, saying Taiwan remains committed to cooperation and development with Pacific nations. Taiwan attended the forum as a development partner rather than a formal dialogue partner.
The dispute highlights growing geopolitical competition in the Pacific, where China has expanded its influence while the United States, Australia and New Zealand are also increasing engagement with island nations.
