Two workers trapped inside a hydropower tunnel in Nepal for nine days have been rescued alive, in a dramatic breakthrough amid the country’s devastating flood disaster. The men, identified as Sanjay Shah and Kabir Maharjan, were found inside the Upper Trishuli 3A hydropower project in Rasuwa district.
The workers survived in an underground chamber after floodwaters, mud and debris blocked the tunnel following the August 26 disaster. Rescue teams faced extremely difficult conditions, using drilling and controlled blasting to clear the way and reach the trapped men.
Their rescue has brought a rare moment of hope to an otherwise devastating disaster, as authorities continue searching for other workers believed to be trapped in hydropower tunnels. Rescue operations remain underway across several affected projects, with teams from Nepal and other countries assisting the search.
