Allahabad High Court Grants ₹10 Lakh Compensation to Rape Survivor

The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to pay ₹10 lakh compensation to a mentally challenged rape survivor who was 17 years old when she became pregnant following the alleged assault in 2023. The order was passed by Justice Vinod Diwakar while hearing a petition filed by the survivor’s maternal grandfather, who has been pursuing the case on her behalf.

The court observed that the victim belongs to a particularly vulnerable category and emphasized the state’s responsibility to ensure adequate support, protection, and rehabilitation for survivors of sexual violence. Taking into account her mental condition and the hardships faced by the family, the High Court directed the authorities to release the compensation amount under the applicable victim compensation scheme.

The case has drawn attention to the challenges faced by survivors with disabilities in accessing justice and support services. Legal experts have welcomed the court’s intervention, stating that the compensation will help provide medical care, rehabilitation, and financial assistance to the survivor while the criminal proceedings against the accused continue.
