G7 foreign ministers have called on Iran to stop arming and supporting Yemen’s Houthi rebels, warning that the group’s military activities could further escalate tensions in the region. The statement was issued after a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The G7 also condemned continued Houthi attacks in Yemen and against Saudi Arabia. The ministers urged the Houthis to immediately halt military operations, threats and attacks on civilian shipping, and return to the political process.
The group warned that the escalating conflict poses risks to regional stability, global energy security and international trade. Concerns are particularly focused on shipping routes around the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which are important for global commerce and energy supplies.
