The Central Government has temporarily restricted access to the messaging platform Telegram across India until June 22, ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21. The decision was taken following concerns that several cheating networks were allegedly using the platform to spread fake paper leaks, misinformation, and fraudulent exam-related content targeting medical aspirants.

According to reports, the action was initiated by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act after recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA). Authorities reportedly found that Telegram’s message-editing feature was being misused by fraudsters to manipulate information and deceive students. Investigative agencies, including cybercrime units and state police departments, have been involved in the crackdown.
The NTA welcomed the move, stating that it is aimed at ensuring a fair and transparent examination process. Officials have urged candidates not to trust rumors regarding question paper leaks and to rely only on official updates from the NTA. The temporary restriction is expected to remain in place until after the re-examination concludes, as authorities intensify efforts to protect the integrity of one of India’s largest entrance exams.
