RBI Monetary Policy Meeting in Focus; Markets Await Interest Rate Decision

The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) three-day Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting has begun, with financial markets, banks, businesses, and investors closely tracking the outcome. The policy decision, scheduled to be announced on 5 August, is expected to determine the direction of interest rates, inflation management, and economic growth in the coming months. According to a Reuters survey, 68 out of 72 economists expect the RBI to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.25%, continuing its cautious approach despite rising global uncertainties.

The RBI’s decision comes at a time when inflation has edged higher, with retail inflation rising to 4.38% in June, slightly above the central bank’s medium-term target of 4%, though still within its tolerance band of 2–6%. Policymakers are also assessing the impact of volatile crude oil prices, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and the ongoing conflict involving the US and Iran, all of which could influence inflation and economic stability. While several global central banks have moved towards tighter monetary policies, the RBI is expected to prioritize stability and closely monitor incoming economic data before making any changes.

Investors are also watching the RBI’s commentary on the Indian rupee, bond market, and future policy outlook. The rupee recently strengthened on the back of declining crude oil prices and strong foreign capital inflows, but the bond market remains under pressure after the postponement of India’s inclusion in a major global bond index. Market experts believe the central bank may maintain a neutral policy stance while leaving the door open for future action if inflation or global risks intensify. The outcome of this week’s policy meeting is expected to have a significant impact on stock markets, loan and deposit interest rates, and overall investor sentiment across the country.
