Fresh fighting has erupted in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region between federal forces and an alliance led by Tigrayan forces, following months of rising tensions. The renewed clashes have raised concerns about a return to a broader conflict in the region.
The conflict comes years after the devastating Tigray war that ended with a 2022 peace agreement. Recent political and military tensions have increased concerns that the situation could again destabilise northern Ethiopia and neighbouring areas.
Humanitarian organisations are also facing challenges as violence affects civilians and movement in the region. The International Committee of the Red Cross has been involved in evacuating people from conflict-affected areas, highlighting the growing humanitarian concerns.
