An avalanche struck the base camp of the 7,126-metre Himlung Himal in Nepal’s Manang district on September 27, killing at least four people and leaving 12 others missing. The avalanche buried tents where Nepali mountain guides and support staff were staying while preparing the route for the upcoming autumn climbing season.
Rescue teams recovered two bodies on Sunday and two more on Monday. The victims were identified as Chhebi Bhote, Pasang Bhote, Birendra Gurung and Ghan Shyam Rai. The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association is coordinating the search for those still missing, with difficult weather and unstable mountain conditions making the operation challenging.
The avalanche came amid heavy rainfall and snowfall across parts of Nepal, with floods and landslides also reported in Manang and other districts. Rescue efforts at Himlung Himal are continuing as teams search the avalanche-hit base camp for the remaining missing workers and guides.
