Floodwaters in Bangkok have started to ease after days of heavy rainfall, with Thailand’s government expecting water levels in the capital to recede further over the next two to three days if there is no additional heavy rain. The flooding has affected large parts of the city and disrupted road transport and daily life.
The situation has also affected air travel from Bangkok. Thai Airways plans to cut around 30 flights, or roughly 30% of its scheduled departures from the capital, as the airline works to restore normal operations following the disruption caused by the floods.
Meanwhile, Suvarnabhumi Airport has faced major baggage-handling problems, with around 5,000 Thai Airways bags reportedly stranded at the airport. The airline’s CEO said the backlog is expected to be cleared within 72 hours as additional efforts are made to restore normal operations.
