Telegram’s temporary ban in India is expected to be lifted today under directives issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The messaging platform was restricted ahead of the NEET-UG re-test amid concerns that certain groups were allegedly using the app to spread misinformation, fake paper leak claims, and manipulated content. The move was part of a broader effort by authorities to ensure a fair and secure examination process. While the restriction is being withdrawn, officials have indicated that some safeguards will continue to remain in place for the time being.

One of the key restrictions that will continue is on Telegram’s message-editing feature, which is expected to remain disabled until June 30. Authorities reportedly raised concerns that the feature could be misused to alter messages after they were sent, making it difficult to track the original content and potentially aiding the spread of misleading information. By keeping this feature restricted, officials aim to maintain greater transparency and accountability on the platform while monitoring online activity related to major public events and examinations.
Although the ban is being lifted, users may not see an immediate return to normal service across the country. At the time of reporting, Telegram remained unavailable on several app stores, and access had not yet been restored on all internet networks. Industry experts say the restoration process is likely to happen in phases, with different telecom providers and internet service providers enabling access gradually. Users have been advised to rely on official announcements regarding the platform’s availability and feature updates as services continue to be restored nationwide.
